Prof. Dr. Amir Ben Porat is a distinguished sociologist with extensive experience in both academia and applied social research. He earned his B.A. in Sociology and Political Science (1967) and M.A. in Sociology (1971) from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, followed by a Ph.D. from Strathclyde University in Glasgow, Scotland (1973). Prof. Ben Porat has held various academic positions, including Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Behavioral Sciences, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. His research spans sociology of sport, class and state capitalism, social theory, and social inequality. He has directed several research projects and published extensively in his fields of specialization. Prof. Ben Porat has been an influential figure in the development of social sciences in Israel, contributing to numerous professional organizations and research initiatives. He retired in 2007 but continues to impact the academic community through his ongoing involvement in sociological research and education.

Professional Experience:

Prof. Dr. Amir Ben Porat has had a distinguished academic and professional career spanning several decades. He began as a researcher at the Economic & Social Research Institute of the Histadrut in Tel-Aviv from 1966 to 1969 and later became the Head of the Social Research Department at the same institute until 1971. He then transitioned to academia, serving as a part-time lecturer at the Department of Industrial Engineering, Technion, Haifa (1973-1974). Prof. Ben Porat joined Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in 1975, where he held various positions including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and eventually Associate Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences until 2001. During his tenure, he also directed the Unit of Projects Evaluation at the Hubert Humphrey Center for Social Ecology and served as the Director of the Israel Social Science Research Journal. Additionally, he chaired the Ph.D. program and the Graduate Studies Department at Ben-Gurion University. After his time at Ben-Gurion University, he continued his academic contributions at the College of Management in Rishon Le Zion and served as the Student’s Dean for Academic Studies. Prof. Ben Porat retired in 2007 but remains active in his field, contributing to research and professional organizations.

Prof. Dr. Amir Ben Porat’s research interests are diverse and encompass several critical areas within sociology. His primary research focuses on the sociology of sport, particularly examining the intersection of sports with social class and state capitalism. He is also deeply interested in social theory and social inequality, exploring how different societal structures and systems impact various populations. Prof. Ben Porat’s work often delves into class analysis, investigating the dynamics and implications of class divisions in society. His expertise extends to industrial sociology and psychology, providing insights into behavior within work organizations. Through his comprehensive research, Prof. Ben Porat contributes significantly to the understanding of complex social phenomena and their broader implications.
