Mr. Nega Jibat is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminology at Jimma University, Ethiopia, where he has been a member of the academic staff since 2007. He specializes in Sociology with a focus on health and well-being. Mr. Nega is currently pursuing his PhD in Sociology at Addis Ababa University. He holds an MA in Sociology of Health and Well-being (2011) and a BA in Sociology and Social Anthropology (2005), both from Addis Ababa University. His research interests include the study of vulnerable groups such as children, women, youth, the elderly, and the poor, as well as health and well-being, criminal and victimization behavior, migration, diaspora, safety, gender, and education. In his professional journey, Mr. Nega has served in various academic and administrative roles at Jimma University, including Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work, and has been actively involved in consultancy services for governmental and non-governmental organizations. He is currently an Advisory Board Member of the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia, South West Area Office, and holds leadership positions in several professional and community organizations. Mr. Nega is fluent in Afan Oromo, Amharic, and English, and has contributed significantly to the field of sociology through his teaching, research, and community service initiatives.

Education:

Mr. Nega Jibat is currently a PhD candidate in Sociology at Addis Ababa University, where he is deepening his expertise in the field. He holds a Master’s degree in Sociology of Health and Well-being, also from Addis Ababa University, obtained in 2011. Prior to that, he completed his undergraduate studies at the same institution, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology in 2005. His educational background has provided him with a strong foundation in sociological theories and practices, particularly in the context of health and well-being.

Professional Experience:

Mr. Nega Jibat has a robust professional background, marked by extensive experience in both academic and administrative roles at Jimma University. Since joining the university in 2007, he has progressed through various positions, including Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and currently, Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminology. From 2012 to 2014, he served as the Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work. Additionally, he has been actively involved in the Jimma University Workers’ Saving and Credit Association, serving as Deputy Chair and Chair between 2017 and 2021. Mr. Nega has also contributed to the Family Guidance Association of Ethiopia as an Advisory Board Member for the South West Area Office. His leadership roles extend to the Jimma Central Rotary Club, where he served as Secretary during the 2019/2020 term and is currently the Treasurer. Moreover, he has been co-chairing the Ethiopian Society of Sociologists, Social Workers, and Anthropologists (ESSSWA) JU-Branch Office since 2013. His professional journey is complemented by extensive consultancy work with various governmental and non-governmental organizations, where he has provided services in needs assessment, proposal development, feasibility studies, social and environmental impact assessments, guidelines development, and monitoring and evaluation.

Research Interests:

Mr. Nega Jibat’s research interests are centered on the well-being of vulnerable groups, including children, women, youth, the elderly, and the poor. His work extensively covers health and well-being, exploring how various sociological factors influence these areas. He is also deeply interested in criminal and victimization behavior, investigating the social dynamics that lead to crime and how communities can better support victims. His research extends to migration and diaspora studies, examining the social and cultural impacts of migration on individuals and societies. Additionally, Mr. Nega focuses on issues of safety, gender, and education, seeking to understand and address the disparities and challenges in these fields. Through his research, he aims to contribute to the development of informed policies and interventions that enhance the quality of life for marginalized populations.
